Identifying Mice in Raleigh

The typical house mouse has thin whiskers and narrow back feet. Its claws are short, but its tail is long. Unlike rats, mice have some hair on their tails and have large ears. A house mouse has a body covered in fur, which could be brown or tan in color.

If you live in Raleigh, you should know that it's not unusual for mice to wander into homes. But don't let the common nature of mice infestations fool you into thinking there's nothing wrong with them. Mice are dangerous, and you should take measures to keep them out of your home.

Why Are Mice Dangerous?

Mice are dangerous for two reasons. First, they can cause health issues. Even if you don't come into direct contact with a mouse, its feces or urine could cause you to become ill. They can spread hantavirus, salmonellosis, and other serious diseases. If you find one mouse in your home, there are probably more. This makes your chances of becoming sick even greater. They could contaminate your food, hurt your family, and make it difficult to sleep at night. Mice also cause property damage. As rodents, mice have an insatiable need to chew. They can chew through your sheetrock, insulation, and electric wires.

What Makes Mice Control So Challenging?

Keeping mice out of your home is difficult, to say the least. There are a few reasons for this.

  • Mice Are Prolific Breeders: First, there's the fact that mice breed quickly. They reproduce in large numbers and can take over a home in a relatively short period of time. If you don't do something about the infestation right away, you may end up with a problem that's out of control.
  • Mice Are Small: Even the largest of mice can fit in small spaces. If there's a small gap under your door or a hole in your screen, a mouse could enter. It's extremely difficult to find and seal up all potential entrances.
  • Mice Are Difficult To Find: All too often, people don't realize they have a mouse infestation until they notice feces or property damage. This is due to the fact that mice remain hidden. They sneak around at night and remain out of sight during the day. Because mice are so difficult to find, getting rid of them is no easy task. You might not know where they live or where to set up traps. Unless you're an expert in mouse behavior, you probably won't be able to trap them successfully. Your traps may remain empty.
  • Mice Are Hard To Trap: Generally speaking, mice are hard to trap. If you try a DIY method of mouse removal, you have a lot going against you. You need to know what mice like to eat and where they like to go. Additionally, you need to understand how to use the traps.

You Need To Treat The Whole Problem

Catching a few mice isn't enough to get rid of your infestation. Although you might get rid of a few mice, there will be more. To effectively eliminate rodents, you have to get rid of them all. This means finding a more effective method of rodent removal. Traps can help reduce numbers of rodents. However,  they won't get the whole infestation.
