What Are Beetles?

Beetles are the largest group of insects, and several kinds turn up in Carolina homes. Some are simple nuisances, while others damage stored food, fabrics, or wood. Most have a hard, shell-like set of wing covers and range widely in size and color, which can make them tricky to tell apart.

The beetles homeowners deal with most fall into a few groups. Pantry beetles infest flour, grains, and dry goods. Carpet beetles feed on wool, leather, and other natural fibers. Wood-boring beetles, including powderpost beetles, tunnel into and weaken structural and decorative wood. Others, like lady beetles, simply wander indoors looking for shelter.

Knowing which beetle you are dealing with matters, because the right treatment depends on whether they are after your food, your fabrics, or the wood in your home.
